The City of Ojai Recreation Department is now accepting applications for the Recreation Specialist II position. The position under general supervision, performs a variety of office support, clerical, and routine secretarial duties of a general or specialized nature. Additionally, the position provides on-site supervision and/or instruction for programs, special events, and support for a variety of programs and activities in the areas of sports and other related parks, recreation, and community programs and services. The ideal candidate is organized, able to communicate clearly, and enjoys working with people of different backgrounds and ages. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Recreation Specialist II --This is the full journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgement and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring three years of experience and successful performance. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Recreation Specialist II May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Respond to questions and inquiries from program participants, parents of participants, and the general public; provide information to resolve complaints or inquiries. Maintain reports and documentation applicable to assigned duties including progress reports on program participants and skills assessment sheets; keep liability forms up to date. Conduct in service training for staff. Organize, set-up, and supervise dances and other recreation activities. Open and close recreational facilities; set up and take down equipment. Assist coaches in other areas of work as necessary. Organize, coordinate, supervise, and perform the work of part time staff responsible for running a variety of recreational sports program including the gymnastics program. Promote the Recreation Department and assigned recreational programs to the public; organize and administer fund raising events; develop promotional materials such as brochures or flyers. Handle recreation program documentation efforts. Prepare and present awards and certificates to program participants. Prepare and conduct skill assessment exercises; determine the placement level of participants. Supervise and instruct recreational programs; recruit, interview, and recommend the hiring of staff. Assist the Recreation Supervisor in the overall coordination of recreation events. Monitor, check, and order necessary supplies including uniforms, equipment, and awards. OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned. JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Recreation Specialist I Knowledge of : Principles and practices of recreation programming. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Basic mathematical principles. Basic first aid methods and techniques. Safety precautions and procedures. Techniques of organizing group recreational, social, and athletic activities. Rules and equipment pertaining to various games. Safe driving principles and practices. Skill to : Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Ability to : Learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without immediate supervision. Maintain accurate records. Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Recreation Specialist II In addition to the qualifications for Recreation Specialist I: Knowledge of : Principles and objectives of recreation and their application to individual and group behavior. Methods, practices, and equipment used in assigned recreation programs. Effective recreation leadership techniques. Ability to : Organize and conduct a wide variety of recreation activities. Promote and organize recreation activities with fellow employees and supervisors. Schedule recreation activities. Write clear and accurate publicity materials. Prepare clear and concise reports. Requisition materials and equipment. Exercise good judgement, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs. Minimum Qualifications : Experience : Three years of experience as a Recreation Specialist I. Experience in recreation leadership and programs is desirable. Training : Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by college level course work in Recreation License or Certificate : Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and First Aid Certificates. Possession of certificates necessary for assigned programs. Special Requirements : Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, and lift 40 lbs.; exposure to outdoors; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for flexible work hours and days. Benefits Salary: $22.83 - $27.74 p/h Deferred Comp: ICMA; City matches lesser of 3% of salary or $200/month. Retirement: City participates in California Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Health, Dental, Vision, Disability: Participation in PERS health plans; City pays 100% employee nd 80% of dependent premium up to PERS Choice rate; City pays 100% of employee premium for dental and vision. City paid short- and long-term disability and life insurance. Holidays: 13 Holidays Vacation: Initial 88 hours per year with subsequent additions for longevity. Sick Leave: 96.0 hours per year. Life Insurance: City paid, $30,000 Life plus ADD Post-Employment Benefits Program: Employees hired after Nov. 1, 2010, who work 10 years continuously and retire from the City, will be eligible to participate in the CalPERS health plans after retirement; City pays the "Employer Minimum Contribution" toward the retirees' premium.
