The City of Indianola (pop.15,833) is a growing community with a historic downtown, located approximately 15 minutes south of Des Moines. It is a safe community with Midwestern values, friendly people and excellent schools. Indianola, which is home to Simpson College, the world-renowned Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame, is known for its excellent access to outdoor activities, a nice trail system, five major parks and two golf courses. The community welcomes thousands of visitors annually who come to Indianola to enjoy major events such as the National Balloon Classic, the Warren County Fair and other events. This position is responsible for a number of tasks, including, but not limited to: Plans, organizes, promotes and administers a variety of monthly programs and services including recreation, health and wellness, music, dance, technology, social classes, programs, seminars, trips and special events for youth, teens and adults. Plans, organizes, promotes and administers an after-school recreation program for grades 6 through 8. Works as staff leader for the Mayor's Youth Council. Establishes and maintains a harmonious relationship between the Parks and Recreation Department and the Indianola Area Senior Center. Participates in department operation activities as a member of the Parks & Recreation Department Service Team and provides office assistance and coverage when needed. Supervises part-time staff in conjunction with Simpson College. Establishes a network of volunteers, hires and supervises independent contractors for different programs, ie: cooking classes, dance classes, etc. The successful candidate will have: High school graduation or equivalent Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in community recreation, sports management or related field. One year experience in a recreation setting or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid driver's license and good driving record. Knowledge of youth and adult recreation equipment and facility needs. Ability to solve problems, handle sensitive public and department contacts, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, work independently, evaluate work performance, supervise employees and volunteers. *** See attached job description for full list of duties and qualifications. *** The hourly rate for this position is $22.02/hour ($45,811.41 Annually) with benefits. This is a Full-Time union position requiring 40 hours per week. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer drug and alcohol screening and background check.
